The short answer
Barranquilla is a one- to two-day stop that is easy to visit as a day trip from Cartagena, about 2 hours away. Go in February or March for Carnival, one of the largest festivals in Latin America, or any time of year for the riverfront, music, local food and Puerto Colombia pier.
Barranquilla is Colombia’s fourth-largest city and the capital of the Caribbean’s party calendar. It sits where the Magdalena River meets the sea, and it is the home of the Barranquilla Carnival, which UNESCO recognizes as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It is also the hometown of Shakira.
What to do in Barranquilla
Gran Malecón del Río. A long riverfront promenade with restaurants, plazas and views of the Magdalena River.
Carnival. The big event: four days of parades, costumes, cumbia and champeta in the days before Ash Wednesday. Outside the season, visit the Casa del Carnaval to see costumes and masks.
Museo del Caribe and the historic center. Learn about the culture of the region and walk the pedestrian streets and the cathedral area.
El Prado. A historic neighborhood of early 20th-century houses.
Puerto Colombia pier. A restored old pier on the sea, popular for sunsets.
Local food. Arroz de lisa, butifarra, carimañolas, enyucado and fresh seafood.
Music and nightlife. Barranquilla lives for live music and dancing.
