The short answer

For a first trip to the Colombian Caribbean, start in Cartagena (3 to 4 days), add Santa Marta and Tayrona National Park (2 to 3 days) and, if you have a week more, finish in La Guajira. Go between December and April for the driest weather, and book desert and island trips with local guides.

Cities and places on the coast

The Caribbean coast of Colombia stretches more than 1,600 km from the Gulf of Urabá to the Venezuelan border. It is not one destination but several very different ones: a colonial walled city, a snow-capped mountain range that drops into the sea, a carnival capital, a desert at the edge of South America and a quiet gulf of mangroves and islands.

This guide helps you choose, order and combine them. Each city has its own page with things to do, where to stay and practical tips.

Which Caribbean destination is right for you?

Barranquilla Carnival, music, local food, river views 1 to 2 days Barranquilla tours

Tolú Quiet gulf, San Bernardo islands, mangroves 2 to 3 days Tolú tours

Best time to visit the Colombian Caribbean

The dry season runs from December to April: sunny days, calmer seas and the best conditions for islands and La Guajira. From May to November it rains more, mostly in short, heavy afternoon showers, with September to November the wettest months. Between June and August there is often a short drier spell, locally called the veranillo. The Caribbean is hot all year, so pack light clothes, sun protection and a rain layer.

How many days do you need?

  • 4 days: Cartagena, with one island day.
  • 7 days: Cartagena (4 days) plus Santa Marta and Tayrona (3 days).
  • 10 days: the two above plus La Guajira, or add Barranquilla for Carnival season.
  • 2 weeks: add Tolú and the San Bernardo islands, and slow down.

Getting around

The main gateways are Cartagena (CTG), Santa Marta (SMR), Barranquilla (BAQ) and Riohacha (RCH), all with domestic flights, and Cartagena and Barranquilla with international ones. By road, the key legs are Cartagena to Barranquilla (about 2 hours), Barranquilla to Santa Marta (about 2 hours) and Santa Marta to Riohacha (about 3 to 4 hours). Tolú is roughly 3 to 4 hours by road from Cartagena. A private transfer saves time and lets you stop in villages along the way.

Practical tips

  • Carry cash in small bills for villages, beaches and La Guajira, where cards and ATMs are scarce.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen and a hat; the sun is strong even on cloudy days.
  • Book island, desert and national park trips with licensed local operators and guides. Parks such as Tayrona close for short rest periods during the year, so check dates before you fix your itinerary.
  • Respect indigenous communities (Wayuu, Kogui, Arhuaco): ask before photographing people and buy crafts directly from artisans.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best city to visit on Colombia's Caribbean coast?

Cartagena is the best first stop: a UNESCO-listed walled city, island day trips and the most flight connections. Santa Marta is the best base for Tayrona and the Sierra Nevada, and La Guajira is for travelers who want desert and Wayuu culture.

How many days do I need for the Colombian Caribbean?

Plan 4 days for Cartagena alone, 7 days for Cartagena plus Santa Marta and Tayrona, and 10 days if you add La Guajira. The coast is long, so cut stops rather than rushing them.

When is the best time to go?

December to April is the driest and sunniest period. May to November brings more rain, with the heaviest downpours usually in September to November, but the sea stays warm and prices and crowds are lower.

How do I get between Cartagena, Santa Marta and La Guajira?

By road: Cartagena to Barranquilla takes about 2 hours, Barranquilla to Santa Marta about 2 hours, and Santa Marta to Riohacha about 3 to 4 hours. Private transfers are the most comfortable option.

Is the Colombian Caribbean hot all year?

Yes. Expect 28 to 33 °C with high humidity at sea level. The Sierra Nevada and the desert nights are cooler.

Can I visit the Caribbean coast with children?

Yes. Cartagena, Santa Marta and the island beaches are family friendly. La Guajira involves long 4x4 rides and basic lodging, so it suits older children better.
