The Caribbean sun sets behind the colonial walls, the cobbled streets start to glow under warm lights and the air fills with rhythms that make it impossible to stand still. Cartagena at night is an experience that completely changes your idea of fun. If you are looking for things to do in Cartagena at night, you are about to find out why thousands of travelers return year after year to this city where every corner tells a story.

Why Cartagena’s nightlife is different

Cartagena is not like other cities: here the night has soul and flavor. The city has perfected the art of mixing the colonial elegance of the Historic Center (cobbled streets, lit balconies and romantic squares full of life) with the overflowing authenticity of Getsemaní, where vibrant murals, terraces and clubs full of folklore, salsa, champeta and good vibes create a contagious energy that will have you dancing until dawn.

Many travelers stay in the most obvious tourist areas and miss the real magic of Cartagena. The city has two equally irresistible nightlife faces, and both are waiting for you. Message us on WhatsApp and we will help you plan your night.

Nightlife experiences you should not miss

1. Rooftops with breathtaking views

Cartagena is Colombia’s city of rooftops, and that is no exaggeration. Picture a refreshing drink while you look at the walls lit by the setting sun, the Caribbean Sea in the distance and the Clock Tower shining in the night.

Top picks

  • Alquímico: three floors of cocktail innovation with panoramic views. It is not just a bar, it is a complete sensory experience.
  • Hotel Movich: perfect for groups who want to share bottles while dancing with a privileged view of the historic center.
  • Townhouse: its unlimited weekend brunch (with bottomless mimosas) has become legendary. Arrive early, it fills up fast.

The best rooftops get booked ahead on weekends. Don’t leave it for the last minute, and check each venue’s website or social media.

More options in Getsemaní

  • KIM Hotel / Hostal, La Azotea: a calm and fun atmosphere, with frequent cultural events. A spacious rooftop with music, a restaurant, a dance floor, restrooms and an excellent view.
  • Masaya: a large space with a food and drink bar and a lively schedule of cultural events, a great option for a night out.

2. Laid-back: neighborhood bars and terraces

Not every night calls for glamour and high heels. Sometimes all you want is a cold beer, good company and background music.

  • Beer Lovers (Getsemaní): the best selection of craft beers in Cartagena, in a casual atmosphere with fair prices.
  • Mr. Cigar: for lovers of good rum and cigars. The owner is very friendly and conversation flows naturally.
  • Terraza Municipal: open-air tables with food trucks, affordable prices and the best spot to watch the Cartagena sunset with an ice-cold beer.
  • Sugar Cocktails Cartagena: tasty, affordable cocktails in a relaxed street setting. Perfect to start the night.

3. Cocktail bars: liquid art in every glass

Cartagena’s cocktail scene has evolved dramatically. It is no longer just about mojitos (though they are still excellent): mixologists combine Amazonian ingredients, Colombian botanicals and international techniques.

  • La Jugada Club House: Rooms: pure fun with 1920s Art Deco decor. They occasionally set off fireworks from the terrace, simply because it is Saturday in Cartagena.
  • El Barón: signature cocktails in an intimate, sophisticated setting. Perfect for a special evening.

After dancing all night you will need to recharge. Cartagena is a food paradise that shines by day and by night: find out where to eat in Cartagena in our guide to restaurants and culinary experiences.

4. For food lovers: dinner with a show

Combine an exceptional dinner with live entertainment:

  • Carmen: contemporary Colombian cuisine in a romantic colonial house. The complete experience.
  • El Beso (Getsemaní): elevates street food into culinary art, with fresh seafood, vegetarian options and live music.
  • Salón Tropical: celebrates Caribbean flavors with seasonal seafood, live music and a festive atmosphere.
  • Casa Bohème: more than a restaurant, a multisensory experience. By day it is a restaurant and wellness studio; at night it turns into a space where food meets DJ sets, sound therapy and art.

5. Salsa, salsa and more salsa: where the feet do the talking

If one thing defines Cartagena, it is its passion for salsa. It doesn’t matter if you have never danced in your life: here the rhythm finds you.

  • Café Havana: the undisputed temple of salsa in Cartagena. With live Cuban music and an atmosphere that takes you to 1950s Havana. The mojitos are on another level, and the musicians… get ready to sweat.
  • Donde Fidel: one of the oldest salsa bars in the city. It can’t get more authentic: locals who have had rhythm in their veins since birth dance here.
  • Crazy Salsa
  • Pub Crawl

One tip: go early (before 11 p.m.), watch the experienced dancers and let yourself go. Cartagena locals are very patient and will be happy to teach you a few basic steps.

6. Clubs to dance until sunrise

Cartagena has clubs for every musical taste.

  • La Movida Gastro Bar: a retro-vintage atmosphere that pairs excellent food with a dance floor that heats up after midnight. There is a dress code, so leave the flip-flops at the hotel.
  • The best clubs charge a cover on weekends (between 40,000 and 50,000 COP, an approximate amount that can change).

7. A unique experience: chivas and party buses

Probably the most popular nightlife experience in the city. Chivas rumberas are traditional open-air buses decorated with lights and bright colors, with powerful sound systems and, in some cases, even dance poles! There is also the Graffiti Bus, another party bus in the city.

How it works: you buy your ticket and book with us, hop on the chiva and tour the city dancing and meeting people from all over the world. They look like something out of an action movie, but the fun is absolutely real.

When to go: pros and cons

  • High season (December to March). Pro: the city is more alive than ever, with special events and every venue open. Con: higher prices and bigger crowds. It is also trade-wind season, so the boat ride back from the Rosario Islands around 3:30 p.m. can be rough, especially in March.
  • Mid season (April to July, October and November). Good weather, fewer tourists, reasonable prices and locals with more time to chat.
  • Low season (August and September). Possible rain, but also the best deals. If an occasional downpour doesn’t bother you, this can be your chance.
  • Weekends vs. weekdays. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays the city bursts with energy. During the week the atmosphere is more relaxed and authentic.
