The short answer

Tolú is a quiet Caribbean gulf town best visited for 2 to 3 days: a boat day to the San Bernardo Islands, a mangrove morning in the Ciénaga de la Caimanera and time for fresh seafood. It is about 3 to 4 hours by road from Cartagena, and December to April is the driest season.

Tolú is a relaxed seaside town on the Gulf of Morrosquillo, in the department of Sucre. It is quieter and more local than Cartagena, and is the main base for boat trips to the San Bernardo Islands.

What to do in Tolú

  • San Bernardo Islands. A coral archipelago with clear water, white sand and snorkeling. Visit islands such as Múcura and Tintipán and the tiny Santa Cruz del Islote, one of the most densely populated islands in the world.
  • Ciénaga de la Caimanera. A mangrove wetland with canals, birds and fishing communities, best explored by boat in the morning.
  • Local seafood. Fried fish, coconut rice and fresh ceviche on the waterfront.
  • Town and seafront. A relaxed promenade and a beach atmosphere that is quiet midweek and busy on weekends and holidays.
  • Neighboring Coveñas. Beaches and a pier close to Tolú.
