Where is the Colombian Amazon?
The Colombian Amazon is the far south of the country, in the Amazon Trapezium (Tres Fronteras), where Colombia, Brazil and Peru meet on the Amazon River. Leticia is the gateway city. From there, boats reach Puerto Nariño, a car-free eco-town, the Ticuna community of Mocagua, Amacayacu National Park and the Tarapoto Lakes, a Ramsar wetland where pink and grey river dolphins live.
It is not a “one-stop” jungle. You combine three experiences: rainforest (treehouses, canopy walks, night walks), river culture (Ticuna, Cocama, Yagua, Murui-Huitoto and other peoples) and wildlife (dolphins, monkeys, birds). Every package below mixes the three in a different proportion.

The 6 best Amazon tours, one by one
1. Leticia & Puerto Nariño: the easiest way to meet the Amazon
If it is your first time, start here. You explore Leticia’s market, the Parrot Park and a medicinal-plant apothecary, cross into Tabatinga, Brazil for food, music and a caipirinha, then sail to Puerto Nariño, where Ticuna, Cocama and Yagua communities live in an eco-town without cars.
2. Above & Below: pick your own lodge
This plan crosses the triple border, visits Mocagua and ends at the Tarapoto Lakes, and lets you choose where to sleep: Hotel Waira Suites, Amazon Bed & Breakfast, BioHotel Arará, La Ceiba or Calanoa. City comfort or river immersion, your call.
3. Chunaki Nature Reserve: a sustainable ecolodge
You stay in Chunaki Ecolodge, with malocas built with traditional techniques and modern comfort, and explore Puerto Nariño and the Tarapoto Lakes by canoe. The price is per person for a group of five.
4. Amazon Expedition: treehouse night and Ticuna community
Five days that mix a night in a treehouse in Los Kilómetros, the cosmogony of the Murui-Huitoto people, lunch with a Ticuna family in Mocagua and pink dolphins at Tarapoto.
5. Biodiversity & Communities: learn from indigenous knowledge
Visit an ancestral maloca where a taita shares his worldview, learn about medicinal plants and Tikuna ceramics in San Martín de Amacayacu, and finish with a woodcarving workshop. The best fit if culture matters most to you.
6. Burú Ancestral Adventure: comfort in the canopy
Sleep at Burú Lodge, in treehouses with a restaurant and a ceremonial maloca, and sail to Isla Cacao and Puerto Nariño. Note that Burú has no pool or hot water: it is a rustic jungle stay with good comfort.
How to get to the Amazon from Cartagena
There are no roads into Leticia, so you arrive by plane. From Cartagena you normally connect through Bogotá to Leticia. For the smoothest schedule:
- Land in Leticia before noon on day one.
- If your last night is in Puerto Nariño or Mocagua, book the return flight after 11:40 a.m.; otherwise a private boat supplement may apply.
- Our team meets you at the airport and handles all ground and river transfers.
Boats from Leticia take about 2 hours to Puerto Nariño and 1 hour 30 minutes to Mocagua. Shared boats follow fixed schedules, while private boats can leave any time between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Best time to visit the Colombian Amazon
You can travel all year, but the experience changes with the river level:
- High water (December to mid-June): more rain and mosquitoes, cooler temperatures and canoe trips into the flooded forest.
- Low water (July to November): higher temperatures, river beaches and sandbanks, longer distances to board boats and some communities harder to reach. A luggage porter fee of COP 80,000 per person applies in this season.
If you prefer cooler weather and flooded-forest canoeing, go in high water. If you want beaches and long walks, choose low water.

Travel responsibly
The Colombian Amazon is one of the country’s great eco-destinations, and visiting it sustainably means leaving it better than you found it. Our packages support community projects and conservation foundations. Help by not littering, respecting wildlife and plants, leaving minerals and artifacts where they are and buying crafts directly from local artisans. You may also bring school supplies or light tools as a donation for the communities.
