The short answer: you can visit the Colombian Amazon all year. What changes is the river level, and with it what you do each day. Our packages run in both seasons.
High water: December to mid-June
- More rain and more mosquitoes.
- Cooler temperatures.
- Canoe trips into the flooded forest.
Choose high water if you want to paddle among treetops and prefer milder heat.
Low water: July to November
- Higher temperatures.
- River beaches and sandbanks.
- Longer walks to board boats, and some communities are harder to reach.
- A luggage porter fee of COP 80,000 per person applies.
Choose low water if you want beaches and long walks on dry ground.
Which one should you pick?
Pick by experience, not by fear of rain: both seasons have pink dolphins, Ticuna communities and Puerto Nariño. Wherever you land, arrive in Leticia before noon on day one. Our complete Amazon guide explains how to get there from Cartagena, what is included and what to pack.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit the Colombian Amazon?
There is no bad month. December to mid-June is high water, with canoe trips through flooded forest and cooler temperatures. July to November is low water, hotter, with river beaches.
Does it rain all year in Leticia?
It can rain at any time of year, but high water (December to mid-June) brings more rain and more mosquitoes.
Is there an extra cost in low water?
Yes. In the dry season a luggage porter fee of COP 80,000 per person applies, because the boats board farther from the shore.
