About this tour

Colombia grows many avocado varieties, each with its own flavor for meals, juices, jams and sweets. This route follows the fruit from the tree to the table in the Antioquia countryside, around El Peñol and the reservoir that flooded the old town.

You walk the historic center of El Peñol and visit Finca Aguacatales to see how the avocado is grown, harvested and turned into different products. Then you visit the Viejo Peñol replica, take a boat ride on the Guatapé–El Peñol reservoir and finish in Marinilla, with its Museo de los Cristos, the main square and the Casa de la Música. There is free time to shop for regional food and crafts.

Coming soon: Montecielo, the Cristo del Embalse, an 86-meter sculpture that will include a panoramic viewpoint over the Peñol rock and the reservoir.

Pairs well with Guatapé & El Peñol Day Trip from Medellín: 740 Steps and a Boat Ride and Concepción Day Trip from Medellín: Colonial Town & San Vicente Ferrer. Planning more days around Medellín? Read the Medellín & Antioquia travel guide and our list of the best day trips from Medellín.
