About this tour

Before dark we board a boat to the mouth of the Don Diego River, where it meets the Caribbean. On the way you see howler monkeys and local and migratory birds; once night falls, caimans quietly show themselves, an endangered species.

At the river mouth the fishing begins: a wooden reel with nylon line, hooks and lead. The team shows you how to set the bait and cast, and also to fish with a rod, cast net and net, and to tell the catch apart. You can release your fish if you like; some of the catch is grilled over wood with lemon, with cassava, plantain or green banana. Meanwhile, by a bonfire, a local fisherman shares stories, myths and legends.

Fishing is done responsibly, following the rules that protect endangered species. Common catches include snook, white snapper, grunts, jack and other local fish.
