In short: A day trip from Medellín to Jericó, in southwest Antioquia, with a carriel workshop, traditional coffee and sweets, the birthplace and sanctuary of Santa Madre Laura and the Cerro El Salvador viewpoint. Private or shared.
About this tour
Jericó is one of those towns tucked into the mountains where tradition is part of daily life. It is the home of the carriel, the leather satchel that symbolizes the paisa identity, and the birthplace of Santa Madre Laura Montoya Upegui, Colombia’s saint.
You walk the commercial streets where carriels are made and visit a leather workshop to see how they are built, climb the town’s 80 steps and taste traditional coffee, stop at the Cardamomo sweets house, and visit the birthplace of Mother Laura, the Religious Museum and her sanctuary (for those who wish to join the liturgy). You finish at the Jardín Botánico Los Balsos and walk up to Cerro El Salvador, the best viewpoint in Jericó.
The private tour adds a dessert tasting at Pizzería de José (a Jericó dessert with more than 100 years of tradition) and the cultural stops of “the Athens of the southwest”: the Bomarzo Cultural Center, the Maja Museum and the Casa Museo de la Historia.
