About this tour
Less than two hours from Cartagena lies Palenque de San Basilio, known as the first free African town in the Americas. It was founded by people who escaped slavery and, centuries later, still keeps its own language, Palenquero, a creole found nowhere else, along with its music, medicine, funeral rites and way of organizing the community. UNESCO proclaimed its cultural space a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005.
This visit is about listening to the community: its history of resistance, drumming and bullerengue, traditional food and the stories told by the people who live there. It pairs well with our other community experiences in Orika and San Jacinto, and with the Montes de María region.
