Things to Do in Salento and the Cocora Valley: Hikes, Tours and Tips

Wax palm viewpoints, the hike to Acaime, Salento's Calle Real and how to choose between a private tour, a shared tour and a full day with Filandia.

Traveler with open arms among wax palms in the Cocora Valley

The short answer: Salento is a colorful mountain village and the Cocora Valley is the home of Colombia’s wax palms, about a short jeep ride away. You can see both in a day, or add Filandia for baskets, galleries and coffee. Go in the morning, ideally Monday to Friday, and choose between a short viewpoint walk or the longer Acaime hummingbird hike.

Salento: what to see

Salento is known for its Calle Real, a pedestrian street of colorful houses, craft shops and cafés. Add a viewpoint walk, a coffee tasting and time for shopping, and you have a relaxed half day.

The Cocora Valley

In the Cocora Valley, the Quindío wax palm, Colombia’s national tree, grows among green hills and cloud forest. There are two classic options:

  • Viewpoint visit (2 to 3 hours). A guide interprets the cloud forest and the palms, and each traveler pays the viewpoint entrance of their choice at the ticket office.
  • Acaime hike (about 5 hours). A medium-difficulty trek of around 5 km over streams, hanging bridges and cloud forest, ending at the Acaime reserve, home to hummingbirds. See the Cocora Valley hike to Acaime.

Local tips

  • Start early: the valley is calmer and clearer in the morning.
  • Prefer weekdays; weekends are busier because the destination has a carrying capacity.
  • Bring a rain jacket, layers and shoes with good grip.
  • Try the wax palm planting ritual offered on the private tour if you want something different from a hike.
